An Introduction to Santorini
Santorini has an era of 96 square kilometers and a permanent population
of 11,381. It is situated 130 nautical miles from Crete and has
a coastline 69 kilometers long.
The west coast of Santorini ends in a steep precipice, the caldera,
that measures 32 square miles and is 300 to 400 meters deep.
Perched on the rim of the cliffs are the island's main towns, Fira and Ia. On the other side of Santorini, the earth spreads out gently down to the sea. Here is where Santorini's most popular beaches are found - Kamari, Perissa and Monolithos - all with black sand. Santorini owes its unique topography and its elliptical shape to volcanic activity in the prehistoric area. The island's soil, thanks to its origins, is particularly fertile. its youngest lavas are less than 50 years old. These two islands represent the volcano's most recent activity. Santorini's famous beaches are spread out mainly along the eastern and the south-eastern side of the island. Each beach has special characteristics, which make it unique and outstanding.
